Leave the Trends And Do You

Have you ever fallen down the rabbit hole of social media and trends I’m your business? More specifically have you taken in so much content through social media and emails from your favorite experts or monthly business reads that you felt you were doing it all wrong and needed to follow their path? Well, that was me a few years back and let me tell you. It was the worst time ever.

I got into a rut in my business a couple of years ago. Hell, to be honest I got into a rut in life. But, I digress. My business was not progressing as I wanted it to and I was starting to feel burned out and extremely unmotivated. I didn’t enjoy the work I was doing. I knew I needed to move in a different direction. I got rid of all my clients and started fresh. The thing is, when I did that meant I had to rebrand, market myself to the clients that I wanted and rebuild the business. No problem there right? That is part of the process. Here’s the issue. While I was busy researching and marketing myself online I started to see all the things that my counterparts in the industry were doing and all the things the gurus said I should be doing and all the wins that others were having and I started trying to “do all the things.” Every social media method, every hack, every “six figure money making tip” I was on it. I jumped from revving up my email marketing, to blogging more, to creating more content to re-purposing content to writing another book… you get the point. I was all over the place. And I quickly became overwhelmed and depressed.

It was too much. When you try to do everything you end up doing nothing. After completely throwing my hands up, feeling like a failure I took a step back. How did I create a successful business originally? Yes, I was changing my services and business model but my strategies in growing my business worked. Why on earth had I moved away from doing the things that helped my gain visibility and be known in my industry? Because I lost myself. I was so busy trying to get to where my mentors were and check off all the goals on my list by any means necessary I forgot to be me, which by the way I’m pretty damn awesome.

Do what works for you and stop trying to follow the trends or paths of others. Yes, it is great to have mentors and coaches that can guide you and give you the “blueprint” to assist you. However, you have to keep in mind that you are still an individual. This is still YOUR business and no one can do what you do the way YOU do it.
